Barcode Generator: what to know

The barcode generator makes every common 1D and 2D barcode from one place. Choose a type, type or paste your data and the barcode is drawn as you type. If the data doesn't fit the symbology, such as letters in an EAN-13 or a wrong check digit in a UPC, it says what's wrong instead of drawing a barcode that won't scan.

Each symbology has its own rules, and the generator follows them: GS1 check digits for UPC, EAN and ITF-14, the mandatory mod 103 check character in Code 128, start and stop characters for Codabar and Code 39, and error correction for 2D codes. Quiet zones, the blank margins scanners need, are included in the downloaded SVG, PNG or PDF by default, so the barcode keeps them wherever you place it.

Not sure which type to pick? Retail products need UPC-A or EAN-13 with a GS1 number. Internal labels usually use Code 128. Shipping cartons use ITF-14 or GS1-128. If you need a lot of data in a small space, choose Data Matrix, PDF417 or Aztec. Our barcode types guide compares them all.

Popular uses

  • Barcodes for documents, forms and tickets
  • Testing scanners and point-of-sale systems with known codes

Tips for the best result

  • Vector files (SVG or PDF) stay sharp at any size, which makes them the best choice for packaging artwork.
  • Don't stretch a barcode unevenly in design software; resize it proportionally or make it at the size you need.
  • Use the barcode reader on this site to double-check a downloaded file before sending it to print.

Read how JustYourBarcode works and our privacy details. Numbers, pictures, CSV files and camera frames are processed in your browser and are never sent to our server. A barcode doesn't register a product number: retail UPC and EAN numbers come from GS1.
