GTIN validator
Check a GTIN and see its GS1 prefix
8, 12, 13 or 14 digits. Spaces and dashes are ignored.
Checked in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
The prefix shows which GS1 organization issued the company number, not where the product was made. A valid check digit means the number is well-formed, not that it's registered: GS1's Verified by GS1 service looks up owners.

GTIN Validator: what to know
GTIN, the Global Trade Item Number, is GS1's family of product numbers: GTIN-8 (EAN-8), GTIN-12 (UPC-A), GTIN-13 (EAN-13) and GTIN-14 (cases and other packaging levels). The validator checks a number's length, that it has only digits and that its check digit is correct, and says which kind of GTIN it is.
It also reads the GS1 Prefix, the first digits of the number, and shows which GS1 organization issued it or what the range is reserved for: restricted circulation numbers for in-store use, coupons, ISSN for magazines or ISBN for books. The prefix shows where the company joined GS1, not where the product was made.
A valid structure doesn't prove a number is licensed to the company using it. To see who a GTIN is registered to, use GS1's free Verified by GS1 lookup.
Popular uses
- Checking supplier product data before importing it
- Validating GTINs for marketplace listings
- Spotting typos in UPC and EAN columns
- Finding out what kind of number a barcode carries
Tips for the best result
- Numbers starting with 2 or 02 are usually in-store or variable-weight codes, not product numbers.
- A GTIN can be padded with leading zeros to 14 digits without changing its meaning.
- Paste numbers as printed: spaces and dashes are ignored.
