GS1-128 Barcode Generator: what to know

GS1-128 (formerly UCC/EAN-128) is Code 128 with a set of rules for supply-chain data. It starts with the FNC1 character and carries one or more GS1 Application Identifiers: two to four-digit codes in brackets that say what the data after them means, such as (01) for a GTIN, (17) for an expiry date, (10) for a batch and (00) for an SSCC on a pallet.

Type your data in the bracketed form, for example (01)09506000134352(17)261231(10)ABC123. The generator checks each field against the AI's format, including lengths, digits-only fields, dates and GTIN or SSCC check digits, then encodes it with the FNC1 separators scanners need after variable-length fields. The human-readable line under the barcode keeps the brackets.

GS1-128 is used on cases and pallets rather than on retail products at the till. A symbol may hold at most 48 data characters and should be no wider than 165 mm, so a full logistics label often splits its data over two or three barcodes.

Popular uses

  • SSCC pallet and parcel labels for retailers and distribution centres
  • Case labels with GTIN, batch and expiry or best-before date
  • Healthcare and food traceability labels with lot numbers
  • Variable-weight products with a net weight AI

Tips for the best result

  • Put fixed-length AIs such as (01), (17) and (00) before variable-length ones such as (10) and (21).
  • Dates are YYMMDD; a day of 00 means the end of that month.
  • Check your trading partner's label specification for which AIs they require and the minimum bar height.
