ISBN Barcode Generator: what to know

Books carry an EAN-13 barcode of their ISBN-13 on the back cover, usually in the bottom right corner. Book numbers have their own GS1 prefixes, 978 and 979, called Bookland, so any ISBN-13 is also a valid EAN-13 that shop scanners understand. The ISBN is usually printed in text above the barcode as well.

Enter an ISBN-13 with or without hyphens, or an older ISBN-10, which is converted to its 978 ISBN-13 with a recalculated check digit. The generator checks both kinds of check digit, so a typo in the number doesn't end up on your cover.

You need an ISBN first: it comes from the ISBN agency for your country, such as Bowker in the United States or Nielsen in the UK and Ireland, and some countries issue them free. Many US retailers also expect a 5-digit price add-on to the right of the main barcode, where 5 means US dollars and 90000 means no suggested price.

Popular uses

  • Back covers of self-published paperbacks and hardbacks
  • Replacing a barcode on a reprint or a new edition
  • Barcodes for workbooks, catalogues and printed music with an ISMN
  • Labels for bookshop and library stock

Tips for the best result

  • Each format (paperback, hardback, ebook, audiobook) needs its own ISBN and barcode.
  • Most cover templates from print-on-demand services leave a space for the barcode; check the size they expect.
  • Keep the barcode on a white box on dark or busy covers so the bars and quiet zones stay clear.
