EAN-13 Barcode Generator: what to know

EAN-13 is the retail barcode used in most of the world: 13 digits made of a GS1 Prefix and company number, an item reference and a check digit. It's the same family as UPC-A, and since 2005 scanners in the US and Canada read it too, so an EAN-13 from any GS1 organization works in shops worldwide.

Enter 12 digits and the generator adds the check digit, or enter all 13 and it verifies the last one. The first digit is printed outside the bars on the left; it's encoded by the pattern of the left-hand digits rather than by bars of its own, which is how EAN-13 fits 13 digits into the same width as a 12-digit UPC-A.

The first two or three digits are often called a country code, but they only show which national GS1 organization issued the company's prefix. A product with a 500 prefix was registered with GS1 UK but could be made anywhere. Look up any prefix in our GS1 prefix list.

Popular uses

  • Product packaging for shops in Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania
  • Products sold internationally from one barcode
  • Marketplace and wholesale listings that ask for an EAN
  • Shelf and stock labels in EAN-based retail systems

Tips for the best result

  • At 100% magnification an EAN-13 is 37.29 mm wide including its quiet zones; GS1 allows 80% to 200%.
  • Leave 11 bar-widths of clear space on the left and 7 on the right; the standard quiet zone setting includes them in the file.
  • If your number starts with 0, it's also a valid UPC-A; convert it with the UPC to EAN converter.
