Check Digit Calculator: what to know

Every GS1 number, from an EAN-8 to an 18-digit SSCC, ends with a check digit calculated from the digits before it. The calculator works it out for any length and shows each step: every digit, its weight of 3 or 1, the products, the total and how far that is from the next multiple of 10.

The weights start at 3 on the rightmost digit before the check digit and alternate leftwards. That's why one rule covers UPC-A, EAN-13, GTIN-14 and SSCC alike: a leading zero adds nothing to the sum, so the check digit of a UPC and of the same number written as an EAN-13 are the same.

Paste a full number to check whether its last digit is right, or the number without its check digit to calculate it. A wrong check digit usually means a typo, so fix the number at its source rather than just changing the last digit.

Popular uses

  • Completing a UPC or EAN from your item numbering
  • Building GTIN-14s for cases and SSCCs for pallets
  • Checking product numbers in a spreadsheet before import
  • Learning how barcode check digits work

Tips for the best result

  • Don't change only the check digit to make a number valid; a mismatch usually means another digit is wrong.
  • Spaces and dashes are ignored, so you can paste numbers as they're printed.
  • ISBN-10s use a different rule (mod 11, where X means 10); choose ISBN-10 as the number type to see it worked out.
