UPC to EAN Converter: what to know
A UPC-A and an EAN-13 are the same kind of number: a UPC-A is a 12-digit GTIN, and writing it with a zero in front makes the equivalent 13-digit EAN-13. The converter does this in both directions and keeps the check digit, which doesn't change because a leading zero adds nothing to the GS1 sum.
Going from EAN-13 to UPC-A only works when the EAN-13 starts with 0. An EAN-13 starting with any other digit was issued outside the UPC system and has no UPC-A form, but modern US and Canadian scanners read EAN-13 directly, so it doesn't need one.
The converter also checks the check digit, so a mistyped number is flagged rather than converted. It can expand a zero-suppressed 8-digit UPC-E into its full UPC-A as well.
Popular uses
- Listing US products on marketplaces that ask for an EAN
- Importing UPCs into systems that store 13 or 14-digit GTINs
- Matching product data between US and international suppliers
- Expanding a UPC-E from a small pack to its full number
Tips for the best result
- Spreadsheets drop leading zeros; format GTIN columns as text before pasting.
- Any GTIN can be padded with zeros to 14 digits for databases.
- The barcode on the product doesn't need to change; scanners treat both forms as the same product.
