ISBN Converter: what to know
Books published before 2007 often have 10-digit ISBNs, while everything now uses 13. The ISBN converter turns an ISBN-10 into its ISBN-13 by adding the 978 prefix and calculating a new check digit, and turns a 978 ISBN-13 back into its ISBN-10.
The two systems use different check digits. ISBN-10 weights the digits 10 down to 1 and uses mod 11, so its check digit can be 10, written X. ISBN-13 uses the GS1 mod 10 rule with weights of 1 and 3, so its check digit is always a digit. The converter validates the check digit you enter before converting.
ISBN-13s starting with 979 have no ISBN-10 equivalent; they were introduced when the 978 range began to run out, and 979-0 is used for printed music (ISMN).
Popular uses
- Updating old catalogue records to ISBN-13
- Matching book data from sources that use different formats
- Finding the ISBN-10 that older systems and listings ask for
- Checking an ISBN for typos before ordering or publishing
Tips for the best result
- Hyphens are ignored, so paste ISBNs as they're printed.
- An X in an ISBN-10 can only be the last character.
- To make a barcode from an ISBN, use the ISBN barcode generator.
