Barcode Reader: what to know
The barcode reader decodes a barcode from a picture instead of the camera: a screenshot, a photo from your phone, a scanned page or a barcode file someone sent you. Drop or choose the file, or paste a screenshot, and the reader shows each barcode's type and the data it contains; several barcodes in one picture are all read.
It uses the same ZXing decoder as the camera scanner and reads 1D barcodes such as UPC, EAN, Code 128, Code 39 and ITF as well as 2D codes such as QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec. Barcodes that are sharp and fill a good part of the picture read best.
The picture is opened by your browser and decoded on your device. It isn't uploaded or stored, so it's safe to check labels, tickets or documents that contain personal data.
Popular uses
- Reading a barcode from a screenshot or an emailed label
- Checking a barcode file before sending it to print
- Decoding a photo of a product, ticket or document
- Getting the number from a barcode when no scanner is around
Tips for the best result
- Crop a large photo around the barcode if it isn't found.
- Straighten and sharpen blurry photos; a sharp, front-on photo reads best.
- For very small barcodes, take the photo closer rather than zooming in afterwards.
