UPC Barcode Generator: what to know

UPC-A is the 12-digit barcode on almost every product sold in the United States and Canada. The number is a GTIN-12: your GS1 Company Prefix, an item reference you assign to the product, and a check digit calculated from the other 11 digits. The barcode shows the first digit to the left of the bars, the last to the right and the rest underneath in two groups of five.

Type 11 digits and the generator calculates the check digit; type 12 and it verifies the last one, so a mistyped number is caught before it reaches the printer. The barcode is drawn to the UPC-A pattern with its guard bars and the quiet zones scanners need on both sides.

A UPC barcode is only as good as its number. To sell through retailers and on marketplaces such as Amazon, the number should be licensed to your company by GS1 US or GS1 Canada. Numbers bought from resellers may be registered to someone else, which is why many retailers check GS1's database before listing a product.

Popular uses

  • Retail packaging for products sold in the US and Canada
  • Barcodes for marketplace listings that need a GTIN
  • Replacing a damaged or missing barcode label on stock
  • Point-of-sale testing with a known product number

Tips for the best result

  • GS1 recommends printing UPC-A at 80% to 200% of its nominal size, which is about 37.3 mm by 25.9 mm at 100%.
  • Don't cut the bars shorter to save space; truncated barcodes are harder to scan from an angle.
  • Keep at least 9 times the narrowest bar width clear on each side of the bars.
