Barcode Scanner: what to know

The barcode scanner turns your phone, tablet or laptop camera into a barcode reader, with no app to install. Press Start, allow camera access and point the camera at a barcode: it's decoded as soon as it comes into focus, with the barcode type and the text or number it holds.

Decoding uses ZXing, the widely used open-source barcode library, running in your browser. It reads retail barcodes (UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8), Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar, ITF and 2D codes including QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec.

Camera frames are processed on your device and never uploaded, recorded or stored. The camera turns on only when you press Start and turns off when you stop or leave the page. Browsers only allow camera access on secure pages and after you give permission.

Popular uses

  • Checking a printed barcode reads before a big print run
  • Looking up the number on a product's barcode
  • Reading tickets, labels and ID barcodes without a scanner
  • Testing barcodes you made with the generators on this site

Tips for the best result

  • Hold the barcode flat and fill about two-thirds of the frame.
  • Use even light and tilt slightly to avoid glare on glossy labels and screens.
  • On phones with several cameras, choose the main rear camera for the sharpest focus.

Read how JustYourBarcode works and our privacy details. Numbers, pictures, CSV files and camera frames are processed in your browser and are never sent to our server. A barcode doesn't register a product number: retail UPC and EAN numbers come from GS1.
