EAN-8 Barcode Generator: what to know

EAN-8 is the short version of the EAN retail barcode, made for packs too small for an EAN-13, such as cosmetics, confectionery and small tubes. It encodes 8 digits: a GS1-8 Prefix, an item reference and a check digit, in about two-thirds of the width of an EAN-13.

Type 7 digits to have the check digit calculated, or all 8 to check it. The generator draws the barcode with the standard guard bars and the quiet zones of 7 bar-widths on each side that scanners need.

EAN-8 numbers aren't built from your company prefix: each one is issued individually by your national GS1 organization, because there are far fewer of them. Numbers starting with 0 or 2 are restricted circulation numbers that a company can only use inside its own stores, for example on in-store labels.

Popular uses

  • Small retail packs such as lip balm, gum and sample sizes
  • Products where the label area is too small for an EAN-13
  • In-store item labels using restricted circulation numbers
  • Testing scanners that need to read EAN-8

Tips for the best result

  • Try an EAN-13 at reduced magnification first; GS1 prefers EAN-13 whenever it fits.
  • Avoid placing an EAN-8 around a tight curve, where the bars at the edges become hard to read.
  • Like other EAN codes, print it at 80% to 200% of nominal size and don't cut the bars short.
