Codabar Generator: what to know
Codabar is a simple barcode from the 1970s that encodes the digits 0 to 9 and the symbols - $ : / . + between start and stop characters A, B, C or D. It's self-checking and easy to print, even on dot-matrix printers, which is why it spread through libraries, blood banks, photo labs and courier airbills.
Type your number and choose the start and stop characters; the generator draws the barcode with the gaps between characters that Codabar uses. Some systems call the start and stop letters T, N, * and E instead of A, B, C and D; they're the same patterns.
Codabar is a legacy symbology: it's still read by nearly every scanner and still used in systems built around it, but for new labels Code 128 is shorter and supports far more characters.
Popular uses
- Library book and membership card numbers
- Blood bank and laboratory sample labels
- Replacing labels in an existing Codabar-based system
- Testing scanners for legacy symbology support
Tips for the best result
- Match the start and stop characters your library or lab system expects; some use them to tell label types apart.
- Codabar has no check digit by default, so double-check numbers before printing.
- Leave clear space of at least 10 times the narrowest bar on each side.
