Data Matrix Generator: what to know
Data Matrix is a square or rectangular 2D code made of black and white cells, framed by an L-shaped solid border on two sides and a dotted timing pattern on the other two. The modern version, ECC 200, uses Reed-Solomon error correction, so a code can be read even when part of it is damaged or dirty.
It packs a lot into very little space: a short serial number fits in a 10 by 10 cell square a few millimetres wide, and the largest symbol, 144 by 144 cells, holds up to 3,116 digits. That's why it's used to mark electronic components, car parts and surgical instruments, often etched straight into metal.
GS1 DataMatrix, Data Matrix with GS1 Application Identifiers, is the standard for healthcare products, including the UDI on medical devices and serialized medicine packs. The generator encodes your text or numbers into an ECC 200 symbol and picks the smallest size that fits.

Tips for the best result
- Keep a quiet zone of at least one cell around the code; more is safer.
- Phone camera apps vary in Data Matrix support; dedicated scanners and our camera scanner read it reliably.
- Print cells square; stretching the code makes it harder to read.
