ITF-14 Barcode Generator: what to know

ITF-14 is the barcode on outer cases and shipping cartons. It encodes a 14-digit GTIN in Interleaved 2 of 5, a digits-only symbology that encodes pairs of digits, one in the bars and one in the spaces. Its wide bars and tolerance of rough printing make it suited to printing directly onto corrugated cardboard.

A case GTIN-14 is built from the GTIN of the product inside: an indicator digit from 1 to 8 for the packaging level, the first 12 digits of the GTIN-13 and a new check digit. Enter 13 digits and the generator calculates the check digit, or all 14 to verify it. The barcode is drawn with a bearer bar, the frame that evens out printing pressure and stops partial scans.

GS1 specifies a larger size for ITF-14 than for retail barcodes because cartons are scanned at a distance on conveyors and in warehouses: an X-dimension of about 0.495 mm to 1.016 mm, a bar height of at least 31.75 mm, and quiet zones of at least 10 times the narrow bar.

Popular uses

  • Outer cases and shipping cartons of retail products
  • Inner packs and trays with their own packaging level
  • Printing directly on corrugated board
  • Warehouse receiving and conveyor scanning

Tips for the best result

  • Each packaging level with a different quantity needs its own GTIN-14 and indicator digit.
  • Print the barcode on two adjacent sides of the carton so it can be scanned however it's stacked.
  • Don't make an ITF-14 from a product's GTIN with a different quantity; each pack size is a separate trade item.
