MSI Plessey Generator: what to know
MSI, also known as Modified Plessey, is a digits-only barcode developed by the MSI Data Corporation from the earlier Plessey code. You'll still find it on supermarket shelf edge labels and on bin locations in warehouses, where retail systems from the 1980s and 1990s standardized on it.
Each digit is encoded with four bits, each a bar and a space, which makes MSI simple but long. The generator adds a mod 10 check digit by default, the most common variant, and can use mod 10/10, mod 11, mod 11/10 or none instead; scanners must be set to the same option to read it.
MSI isn't used for products themselves, which carry UPC or EAN barcodes. Choose it when replacing or extending labels in a system that already reads MSI, and Code 128 for anything new.
Popular uses
- Shelf edge labels in shops
- Warehouse bin and location labels
- Inventory systems that were set up for MSI
- Testing scanner support for MSI Plessey
Tips for the best result
- Enable MSI in your scanner's settings if it doesn't read; many scanners ship with it switched off.
- Use the same check digit option the scanner is configured for.
- Keep MSI barcodes short; long numbers make wide barcodes.
