PDF417 Generator: what to know
PDF417 is a stacked 2D barcode: rows of short linear patterns piled on top of each other, each row made of codewords of 17 modules, which is where the name comes from. It holds far more than a 1D barcode, up to about 1,850 text characters in one symbol, and can be read by many linear imagers as well as 2D scanners.
PDF417 uses Reed-Solomon error correction in levels 0 to 8; higher levels let a scanner recover more of a damaged or dirty code at the cost of a bigger symbol. The generator encodes your text or numbers and lets you choose how much error correction to add.
It's the barcode on the back of US and Canadian driver's licences (following the AAMVA standard), on printed airline boarding passes and on many shipping, customs and government documents.

Tips for the best result
- Use error correction level 2 or more for anything that will be handled or printed on rough paper.
- Keep a quiet zone of at least 2 modules around the symbol.
- Use Data Matrix or Aztec instead if the space is square rather than wide.
